This painting is an acrylic on canvas work. It is very large 142.5cm wide x 171.5cm tall x 4.5cm deep.
The idea's inspiration come from a movie marathon idea, where a mash up of popular movies could interact in a fun and off beat fashion. The painting which has a unique distressed/scratched finish to emulate the look of old scratchy film reels provides a really interesting matt finish and certainly takes the painting to a much higher level visually.
The included movies and fables include: Cliffhanger, Aliens, Predator, Tequila Sunrise, Spiderman, Star Wars, Gravity, The cow jumped over the moon, Batman and Robin, Close encounters of the third kind, Superman, Jurassic Park, Avatar, Snakes and ladders games, Thelma and Louise, Indiana Jones, Edward Scissorhands, Wizard of Oz, Twister, Flushed Away, Tarzan, Lord of the Rings, Little red riding hood, Three little pigs, Aquaman, Ninja Turtles, Pirates of the Caribbean, Charlie and the chocolate factory, Wonder woman, ET, Apollo 12, Godzilla, Scream, Shriek, Planet of the apes and Harry Potter.
The painting starts with Charlie and chocolate factory and the Oompa loompas who are guarding the chocolate river from the Orcs of lord of the rings, and the wicked witch from the Wizard of Oz. After Dorothy lands her house on the wicked witch, she follows the yellow brick road finding her friends along the way until they interrupt a fight between stormtroopers from Star Wars and Luke, Leia, and Yoda. Dorothy and her friends then get arrested by the stormtroopers and are taken to the mothership by means of Apollo 13, and watch the characters from gravity float through space on the way. Dorothy meets with Darth Vader and they become friends. Princess Leia then goes star bathing with Darth Vader in space.
I could go on forever about the intricate storyline that inspired new characters to join in along the way, but sometimes it is fun to try to guess the storyline as you look deeper into the painting. There are so many relationships going on between characters from differing movies, that it provides endless entertainment and speculation.
An awesome amount of time and effort has gone into this magnificent painting and Karen Elzinga has simply outdone herself with this movie inspired painting for lovers of film classics.

Charlie and the chocolate factory was the starting point for this painting, originally it was going to be this movie and the Wizard of Oz, a sort of Charlie meets Dorothy kind of thing, but it soon turned into something much bigger. I'm not stickler for keeping with an idea, l let the work flow direct me, not the other way around. I find there is a definite freedom in painting that way. So as the work progressed so to did the movies, going from two originally to around 38 in the end.
At this stage, Lord of the rings was making an entrance, l went with the idea of having the Orcs marching in and having the Oompa Loompas guarding the chocolate river from them but also from the wicked witch in the Wizard of Oz.
At this point l was really starting to have some fun with the storyline, after Dorothy landed on the wicked witch with her house, she follows the yellow brick road meeting the Scarecrow, Tinman, and the Lion, before she stumbles upon a war going on between the stormtroopers, Princess leia, Luke and Yoda from Star Wars. The stormtrooper's soon realize her value and arrest Dorothy and friends and take her into space borrowing Apollo 13 space rocket, flying past the Astronauts from Gravity who are flying through space, past the cow jumping over the moon to reach and meet with Darth Vader.
Pirates of the Caribbean went in at the bottom below the hobbit house.
This painting really was so much fun to do, and l found myself laughing at my own ideas sometimes, the weirder the better l say!
